New York Transit Museum Holiday Train Show

  • New York Transit Museum Grand Central Gallery and Store (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

This holiday season, the New York Transit Museum’s Grand Central Gallery & Store presents the Holiday Train Show, a cherished tradition that captures the magic of miniature trains and New York City during the holidays.

Lionel model trains, including Metro-North, the whimsical Polar Express, and vintage subway sets, travel a 34-foot, two-level “O” gauge layout that begins at a miniature Grand Central Terminal and winds past New York landmarks on the way to the North Pole. To mark the 40th anniversary of MTA Arts & Design, the 2025 display features work by artists James Yang and Erin K. Robinson, whose bold illustrations bring a fresh creative spark to this beloved holiday tradition.

The Holiday Train Show is free and open to the public, and on view through February 2026. The New York Transit Museum Gallery & Store at Grand Central is open Monday through Friday, 10am to 7:30pm; Saturday and Sunday, 10am to 6pm; and is closed on major holidays. The Gallery is located in the shuttle passage on 42nd Street and Park Avenue, adjacent to the Station Master’s Office.

Stay tuned for updates, and pencil in everything that’s coming up so far:

In celebration of Black History Month, this edition of First Saturdays pays homage to the innovators—those fearless artists who reenvision tradition while building community along the way. Titled after the late poet Jayne Cortez’s rallying cry to “imitate no one,” the evening is inspired by our landmark exhibition Seydou Keïta: A Tactile Lens, which honors this legendary Malian photographer. Tap into interwoven legacies of liberation from across the African diaspora with dynamic programming spanning music and magic to art-making, poetry, and beyond.

Free; registration  is required and includes Museum general admission. Tickets will be released on a rolling basis starting January 16 for Members and January 20 for the public. Sign up for the Brooklyn Museum newsletter  to be notified of the next release.

David N. Dinkins Municipal Building Public Tours

The tallest tower of the David N. Dinkins Municipal Building will be opened for entirely free public tours for the first time this summer. Beginning in June, the public will be able to book tours led by DCAS staff through an online portal, with groups of six people departing from the NYC CityStore in the base of the building.

This access is enabled by a $6 million improvement project on the building, including repairing the building’s historic cupola, installing glass barriers to ensure visitors can safely enjoy the panoramic views of the city, and renovating the rotunda landing to make it safe and inviting to the public.

Mayor Mamdani made the announcement on the second day of Black History Month, in honor of the city’s first Black mayor. The David N. Dinkins Municipal Building is one of the largest government office buildings in the world.

“For the first time ever, New Yorkers and visitors alike will experience the sweeping views of the city’s skyline perched atop the pinnacle of our city’s government operations, 1 Centre Street," said DCAS Commissioner Yume Kitasei. “Upon its completion, this project will increase public access to an iconic landmark and create new ways to experience New York City and preserve our historical building's infrastructure for future generations.”

The David N. Dinkins Municipal Building is home to over 2,000 employees. The building was made a New York City landmark in 1966, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, and renamed after Mayor David N. Dinkins in 2015.

The Honest Kitchen Inflatable Pups

From February 2-3, 20-foot inflatable pups will begin appearing around midtown Manhattan during Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show week.

The larger-than-life installations are part of a pop-up campaign by The Honest Kitchen, timed to coincide with Westminster’s return to its traditional February schedule. While the dog show celebrates elite breeding, perfect grooming and championship ribbons, these inflatables are doing the opposite: spotlighting dogs that look like the ones New Yorkers actually live with, walk and dodge on crowded sidewalks.

Before landing in midtown, the giant pups will “cruise” the city’s waterways, floating past both the Hudson and East Rivers. From there, they’ll touch down at Plaza33, just steps from the Garden, where Westminster’s Best in Show will ultimately be crowned.

From February 2–3, Plaza33 will effectively become a temporary dog park-meets-art installation. The inflatables will be on view from early morning through late evening, offering prime photo ops for commuters, tourists and anyone who suddenly finds themselves staring up at a cartoonishly oversized pup on their way to Penn Station.

Pet parents passing through can grab free samples of The Honest Kitchen’s Wholemade dehydrated dog food, along with limited merch and accessories. On Monday evening, February 2, the plaza will also host a dog-lover meet-up at 6:30PM, inviting New Yorkers and their pups to mingle and snack together. Update: the dog mixer is cancelled!
